Voltedge: What is your current role and how long you have held this position?
Elaine: I’ve been working with Genuity Science since 2017, joining Genomics Medicine Ireland (GMI) as it was then known when it was in start-up mode. My role as Head of HR is to manage the employee life cycle in line with the evolution of the business.
Voltedge: Where do you draw inspiration from?
Elaine: Ambitious, busy people. Positive thinkers. Meditation.
Voltedge: During the course of your career, was there a role model or mentor that stands out for you?
Elaine: I’ve been lucky to have worked alongside some great managers, who have encouraged and supported me. Jacinda Ardern is a strong role model; hardworking, confident, empathetic.
Voltedge: What does the slogan ‘Embrace Equity’ mean to you?
Elaine: Embrace Equity is recognising the need for different approaches to afford everyone an equal chance of success.
Voltedge: What practices or approach have you taken in your organisation to create a more inclusive workplace?
Elaine: On the recruitment front, we’ve widened the net both in terms of the internal hiring teams and externally in terms of candidate pools; considerations around gender mix, geographical spread and nationalities.
On the physical work environment, we’ve made alterations to our office spaces to improve accessibility; automatic doors, accessible facilities including parking spaces and adjustable workstations.
To help create an open culture where employees feel heard, we’ve run weekly HR clinics, and engagement surveys. Transparency and visible action plans to address issues raised in those forums is crucial.
Lastly, we’ve rolled out policies which are fundamental in including but not limited to Equal Opportunities and Dignity At Work policy and a Whistleblowing policy.
Voltedge: What is your favourite quote and why?
Elaine: In the search for optimism, Dr. Seuss always delivers 😊 “Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.”
