In the last budget (December 2020) the government agreed to increase parents leave from 2 weeks to 5 weeks for each parent with effect from April 1st 2021. This means that each parent can take time off around the birth or adoption of their child or the birth of their spouse or partner.
Parental leave will increase from 22 to 26 weeks effective from the 1st September 2020 per child up to the age of 12. If a parent has already taken some or all of their previous entitlement they can still take the additional parental leave if the child is still eligible.
