Sick pay move may add €1 per week to cost of an employee

The Dail is currently considering the introduction of a statutory sick pay scheme (SSP) which is supported by the IMF. However, Irish employers including IBEC, ISME and SFA, are strongly lobbying against any additional cost for employers, stating that SMEs cannot afford any further employment costs, and that this will seriously affect the already critical unemployment figures, stopping any encouragement for companies to recruit.

Last February Minister Burton stated that up to €89m could be saved by having employer footing the bill for sick leave for up to 4 weeks. ICTU also disagree with the plan calling it an “‘own goal”.

Voltedge will update on any developments on this contentious issue.
